Municipal chamber choir "Nizhny Novgorod" is among the most influential musical collectives of the city. Its activity is widely received wide recognition between professionals and music lovers. The founder and organizer of the choir is People's artist of Russia, composer, Honorary citizen of Nizhny Novgorod city Lev Sivukhin who was the choir's artistic director and main conductor since 1973 until his death in 2001.
Currently its artistic director is the student of Lev Sivukhin - Boris Mokeyev.
Since 1973 the choir is engaged in intensive concert activity. In its repertoire there are the choral pieces of Russian and foreign composers (including pieces of Nizhny Novgorod composers). The important directions of the collective's activity are to familiarize the audience with new works of contemporary composers and to renovate the masterpieces of forgotten past. Thus, the music of old polyphonic school masters of Renaissance times appeared such as J. des Prez, O. de Lassus, G. Dufay, С. Monteverdi, C. Janequin. The concerts where sounded hardly performed in 1970-1980-s the best pieces of Russian sacred music of M. Berezovsky, D. Bortnyansky, A. Kastalsky, S. Rakhmaninov, P. Tchesnokov were memorable for the audience.
Currently the collective performs more than forty concerts per season and is the participant of many festivals. Over the years of the concert activity the repertoire of the Chamber choir has grown up to encyclopedic width and become nearly unique. During its existence the Chamber choir has been in numerous tours to the Russian cities, participated in prestigious Russian and international competitions where was honored by the highest awards for masterly performance.
Boris Mokeyev
Honored artist of Russia, a graduate of Gorky choral capella of boys, with a professional education in Gorky state conservatoire named after M. Glinka at choral conducting class of professor, People's artist of Russia L. Sivukhin. Boris is creative director of Nizhny Novgorod choral college named after L. Sivukhin. Laureate of international choral competition in Gorizia (Italy, 1990), laureate of All-Russian international festival-competition "Poyuschee muzhskoye bratstvo" (Singing male fraternity) (Kaluga, Russia, 2000), laureate of All-Russian choral festival-competitional "Khrustalnaya lira" (Crystal Lyre) (Gus-Khrustalny, 2002), participant of All-Russian and international festivals "Riga-2001", "Zolotoy Plyos" (Golden Plyos) (Ivanovo, 2002), laureate of XXVI International festival-competition of church music "Haynowka-2007" (Poland, 2007) etc.
